How to play

Spades, made simple

  1. Bid. Say how many tricks you expect to take. Partners’ bids combine into one team contract. Bid 0 for Nil.
  2. Follow suit. You must play the suit led when you can. The highest card of that suit wins unless a spade is played.
  3. Break spades. Spades are always trump, but you cannot lead them until one has been played on another suit—unless you only hold spades.
  4. Score. Making your contract earns 10 points per bid trick plus 1 per extra trick. Missing loses 10 per bid trick. Nil is worth +100 or −100.

Every 10 overtricks, or bags, costs 100 points. Partners sit opposite. The first team to reach 500 with the higher score wins.
